State government in Wisconsin is helping to create conditions that encourage entrepreneurs as they walk down the pathways of innovation. As I pursue my goal of creating 250,000 jobs and 10,000 start-up companies over the next four years, Wisconsin entrepreneurs will stand at center stage.

Wisconsin is open for business – and entrepreneurs such as the 2,100 people who have entered the Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest since its inception in 2004 will ensure it stays open. The companies and jobs they create today will propel the state’s economy for years and even decades to come.

Since taking office in January 2011, I have been proud to work with members of the Legislature on policies that produce a warmer climate for business. That includes smarter tax policies and a reduction in the red tape often encountered by businesses, especially younger companies that shouldn’t be slowed by regulations and paperwork.

Wisconsin has the resources to become a leader in the “knowledge economy” of the 21st century. We have a strong research and development foundation, incentives for investors to invest in emerging companies and a growing pipeline of early stage deals.

Most of all, Wisconsin has the right entrepreneurial spirit and great ideas. That spirit and innovation is apparent through the Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest, which culminates with awards announced each year at the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Conference. Over time, finalists in this contest have created hundreds of jobs, attracted millions of dollars in venture and angel capital, and contributed to Wisconsin’s economy.

Participants, judges and sponsors in the Business Plan Contest are creating tomorrow’s jobs today. Congratulations to them for helping to make Wisconsin a state where entrepreneurs can – and will – succeed.
